Myanmar's military seized power in February 2021. As of 2026, most Western governments advise caution or against travel to certain areas. Yangon, Bagan and Inle Lake have remained more accessible for tourists, but conditions can change. Check your government's travel advisory before booking. aloSIM does not cover Myanmar — use Airalo, Saily or Roamless for this destination. Connectivity is among the most heavily controlled in the world. The military's Cybersecurity Law (in force since 30 July 2025) criminalises unauthorised VPN use — penalties run to six months' imprisonment and large fines — and rights groups have documented phone inspections at checkpoints, with soldiers searching devices for VPN apps and Facebook. The network is filtered by advanced deep packet inspection, so most consumer VPNs simply fail, and Facebook, WhatsApp, X and Instagram are blocked. For a privacy-minded traveller the implication is blunt: a travel eSIM gives you data but places you inside this surveillance, and a VPN here is a legal and physical risk, not a workaround. Treat blocked services as unavailable, keep sensitive material off the device you carry, and rely on an offline plan — maps, addresses, contacts.
Yangon and Mandalay have 4G coverage on all operators. Bagan has good coverage in the archaeological zone. Inle Lake has signal in Nyaungshwe and main lakeside villages. Remote border areas and mountain regions (Chin State, Kayah State) have very limited or no signal and may also have travel restrictions. Download offline maps before any countryside excursion, and keep an offline copy of addresses and contacts — given the network controls noted above, plan for stretches where blocked services and apps are simply not reachable.
