How much will it cost for your trip?
Despite being French-administered, New Caledonia is not part of the EU telecom zone. French SIM cards incur international roaming charges. Most French carriers offer a New Caledonia roaming option. A travel eSIM is often cheaper. Nouméa has excellent 4G. The Grande Terre interior (mining regions, mountains, waterfalls) has variable coverage. The Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa — widely considered some of the world's most beautiful beaches) have basic signal in main villages.
Nouméa and the southern peninsula have strong 4G on OPT NC. The Grande Terre coast and main roads have reasonable coverage. Lifou and Maré (Loyalty Islands) have OPT signal in Wé and Tadine respectively. Ouvéa's famous beach (lagoon voted most beautiful in the world) has very limited signal. OPT-NC (branded Helia since 2025) is the sole mobile operator — a government monopoly. 4G covers Nouméa and the main coastal road on Grande Terre; the Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa) have 4G in main villages. 5G is in early rollout in Nouméa and the main urban zones (from 2026); the rest of the territory remains 4G. New Caledonia is a sui generis French collectivity and EU PTOM — EU Roam Like Home does not apply.
