The Philippines has three major networks: Globe (best urban + Boracay), Smart (best for remote islands and Palawan/Siargao), and DITO (cheap, weak outside large cities). Coverage drops quickly outside major cities and popular tourist hubs. Palawan (El Nido, Coron), Siargao, Batanes and the Visayas islands have patchy 4G in town centres and limited or no service in remote beaches. If your itinerary includes deep island-hopping (boat safaris, El Nido–Coron expeditions), Smart historically performs better than Globe in those areas. Verify provider routing before purchase, and download offline maps for every island before leaving Manila or Cebu.

Field tip — Typhoon season can disrupt connectivity

During typhoon season (roughly June to November), expect temporary network disruptions across the Philippines. Smart and Globe maintain backup power systems in most areas, but remote islands can lose connectivity for 24–48 hours during severe weather. Check weather forecasts before island-hopping. Save offline maps, ferry timetables and hotel addresses, and pre-download any tickets or booking confirmations — relying on cellular data at a pier or after landing on a small island during a storm is unreliable regardless of provider.

Network coverage in Philippines

Two major networks dominate: Globe Telecom (competitive in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao and main urban areas; wider formal coverage on paper in parts of Luzon and Mindanao) and Smart Communications (strong Visayas backbone and competitive nationwide). DITO Telecommunity is the third carrier, expanding but primarily urban and not yet at the scale of Globe or Smart. For Metro Manila, Cebu City, Davao and main resort areas (Boracay, El Nido town), Globe and Smart both deliver reliable 4G.

Coverage varies significantly by island — remote Palawan interior, Mindanao highlands and less-visited islands have limited signal on any network. Mistakes to avoid in the Philippines

Assuming your home SIM works at home rates here. The Philippines has no regional roaming agreement with any country, so foreign carriers apply international roaming unless your plan explicitly includes it — check before relying on it.
Planning to buy a local SIM at the airport without time. Every Philippine-issued SIM requires passport registration before activation, which takes 15–30 minutes per traveller at airport kiosks — a travel eSIM installed before departure activates on landing without paperwork.
Not downloading offline maps for every island. Palawan beaches outside town centres, the El Nido–Coron route, Batanes and inland Mindanao routinely have no signal — download maps, ferry timetables and accommodation details before leaving Manila or Cebu.
Choosing an eSIM for island-heavy itineraries without checking its network. Smart historically performs better than Globe on remote islands such as Palawan and Siargao — if a provider does not disclose its carrier, expect inconsistent performance away from cities.

Do I need to register my SIM card in the Philippines?
Yes, Philippine SIM cards and eSIMs must be registered, and foreign nationals are not exempt. Tourists are typically asked for a passport (bio page and current visa stamp), proof of address in the Philippines, such as a hotel booking, and a return ticket to the country of origin or another destination. The registered SIM is valid for 30 days, then deactivates automatically.
