How much will it cost for your trip?
Your French SIM works in Réunion with no roaming charges. Other EU SIM holders benefit from RLAH. Réunion has some of the world's most intense hiking — the three calderas (Cilaos, Mafate, Salazie) are accessible only on foot. The Plaine des Sables plateau and Piton de la Fournaise crater area have very limited or no signal. Cirque de Mafate — accessible only by foot or helicopter — has no mobile coverage. Download offline maps and emergency contacts before any multi-day hike.
Saint-Denis, Saint-Paul, Saint-Pierre and all coastal areas have excellent 4G. The three cirques (Cilaos, Salazie, Mafate) have coverage in the main villages accessed by road but Mafate (foot access only) is completely offline. The Piton de la Fournaise approach road and the crater itself have no reliable signal. Download topographic maps (Réunion has excellent IGN map coverage on Organic Maps) before any caldeira or volcano hike.

Réunion has four mobile operators: Orange Réunion (widest coverage), SFR Réunion, Free Réunion and Telco OI. 4G is available across the full coastal ring — Saint-Denis, Le Port, Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, Saint-Pierre and the east coast. 5G is being deployed, with Orange and Telco OI leading. In the interior — the Cirques de Mafate, Cilaos and Salazie — coverage drops significantly on all operators due to terrain. Mafate (car-free) has very limited signal. Orange has the widest mountain footprint. The travel eSIMs here — Airalo, Roamless, aloSIM, Saily and Yesim — use local networks without naming the specific carrier; coverage on the coastal ring is reliable on any of them. One caveat: confirm your plan explicitly lists Réunion — some "France" eSIM plans cover only metropolitan France, not the overseas departments.
