Field tip — EU roaming covers all Spanish territories

EU "Roam Like At Home" rules cover all Spanish territory: mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera), the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro), and the North African enclaves Ceuta and Melilla. The Canaries are an EU outermost region — all are covered without surcharge. The standard EU fair-use roaming cap applies identically across all territories (typically 10–25 GB depending on your plan). A small number of budget MVNOs exclude Spanish island territories from roaming — check your carrier's Spain page specifically. Most travellers with a standard EU SIM do not need a separate travel eSIM for Spain.

Field tip — Sagrada Família, Alhambra and AVE trains require advance booking and data

Spain's most-visited sites and its high-speed rail network both rely on digital ticketing that requires a working data connection. Sagrada Família (Barcelona) and Alhambra (Granada) require timed-entry tickets purchased online in advance — walk-up queues are 3+ hours in peak season and the Alhambra routinely sells out days ahead. AVE high-speed train tickets (Renfe app) are app-based QR codes, and purchasing a last-minute ticket on the train is impractical without a connection. Save your entry QR codes and train tickets as screenshots before travelling, as connections at train stations and crowded monument entrances can be unreliable.

Network coverage in Spain

Spain has four mobile networks: Movistar (Telefónica) — the widest reach in rural inland Spain, the Canary Islands and the Balearics; Orange and Yoigo, now part of the merged MasOrange group; and Vodafone Spain, strong in cities and tourist corridors. In Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and the main coastal resorts, all four perform well on 4G/5G. The gap shows in remote terrain — the Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada, Picos de Europa, Doñana — and quieter island areas, where Movistar leads.

Among the five providers here, the multi-network eSIMs — Roamless, Airalo, aloSIM and Yesim — all connect across several Spanish operators and include Movistar, either selecting the strongest signal automatically or letting you choose the network in settings. Coverage is therefore rarely the deciding factor in Spain: any of these reaches Movistar's rural and island footprint. Only Saily does not disclose its Spanish carrier. Choose on price and data, not network.

Arrival protocol in Spain

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight.
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Pre-book Sagrada Família, Alhambra and other timed-entry sites — save your QR codes offline.
Download offline maps for island and mountain destinations.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Spain
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.

VPN, passwords and documents

Spain has no internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Spain

Buying an eSIM your carrier plan already makes unnecessary. Many plans include Spain at no extra cost — one minute in your carrier app settles it.
Assuming the Canary Islands need a separate or special eSIM. The Canaries and the Balearics are part of Spain and the EU — a standard Spain eSIM covers them, and EU Roam Like At Home applies exactly as on the mainland.
Relying on your home plan without checking its roaming data cap. Many plans include Spain, but the roaming allowance is often far below the domestic one — a two-week trip with navigation and uploads can exceed it.
Not saving museum and train QR codes offline. AVE train tickets (Renfe) and monument entry are app-based QR codes — a failed connection at the gate is a real risk.
