Since 10 July 2025, Turkey's telecommunications authority (BTK) has blocked access to Airalo, Saily, Nomad, aloSIM, Roamless, Yesim and 30+ other international eSIM providers from Turkish networks — including every provider featured and recommended on this page. Their websites and apps do not load once you are inside Turkey. This means: buy, install and fully activate your eSIM before your departure flight. If your data runs out in Turkey, you cannot reach these apps to top up at all — the block is on the providers' domains, so a VPN does not reliably restore access either, and Turkey separately blocks 27+ commercial VPN services. Buy a larger plan than you think you will need, or keep a non-blocked provider or local SIM as fallback. Pre-activated eSIM profiles continue working normally on Turkish networks.

Field tip — Local Turkish SIMs as backup
If your travel eSIM data runs out in Turkey, you cannot reach Airalo, Saily or other affected providers to top up — the block targets their domains, so a VPN is not a dependable fix. The robust fallback is a local Turkish SIM: Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey, and Türk Telekom counters operate at all major airport arrivals halls (Istanbul IST and SAW, Ankara, Antalya, Izmir) and in central city stores. They require passport ID, are not subject to the BTK ban, and tourist plans typically cost €25–€40 for 20–30 GB. Worth keeping your home SIM active for SMS too, in case you need to receive a verification code while sorting out connectivity.
Field tip — Unlimited plans have data throttling caps
Most "unlimited" travel eSIM plans for Turkey include a fair-use limit. Airalo throttles speed after approximately 3 GB/day and Saily after 5 GB/day at full speed. If you need consistent high-speed data throughout the day, a large fixed plan (10 GB or 20 GB) is often more reliable than an unlimited plan.

Network coverage in Turkey
Turkey has three mobile operators: Turkcell (widest national coverage, strongest in rural Anatolia, eastern Turkey and mountainous areas), Vodafone Turkey (strong urban and coastal coverage) and Türk Telekom. All three launched commercial 5G in April 2026, starting in provincial centres. For Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Izmir and Cappadocia tourist routes, all three perform well on 4G/5G.
Turkey's BTK authority has blocked in-country purchase and top-up for essentially all international eSIM providers since mid-2025 — a pre-activated profile keeps working, but you must buy and install before arrival and cannot add data once there. On this page, Airalo routes via Türk Telekom, Yesim via Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom, and Roamless via Turkcell and Türk Telekom — Turkcell being the strongest network for rural Anatolia and the east. For deep-rural travel, Roamless's Turkcell routing is the most reliable eSIM here; a local Turkcell SIM remains a fallback, since the BTK block prevents in-country top-ups.

Arrival protocol in Turkey
Before departure from home — mandatory given BTK block
Buy, install AND fully activate your eSIM before your flight. Once inside Turkey, you cannot access affected provider websites or apps to purchase or activate.
Test the eSIM connection before leaving home — toggle airplane mode, confirm data works on the new line.
Buy a larger data plan than you usually would — mid-trip top-ups are blocked.
Save your eSIM provider's support details offline (email, ticket form). You will need a VPN to access their site from Turkey if anything goes wrong.
Download offline maps for rural Anatolia, Cappadocia hot-air balloon routes, mountain hikes — coverage outside main routes can be inconsistent.
Note the closest local SIM counter at your arrival airport (IST, SAW, ESB, AYT, ADB) as a fallback option.

After landing in Turkey
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
If the eSIM fails entirely: go to a Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey or Türk Telekom counter at the airport for a local tourist SIM (~€25–€40 for 20–30 GB) — these are not subject to BTK restrictions.
VPN, passwords and documents — Turkey specifics
Turkey blocks 27+ commercial VPN services at the IP level (Proton, Surfshark, TunnelBear, CyberGhost and others) and uses deep packet inspection to detect standard VPN protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPsec). A VPN that worked elsewhere may fail in Turkey. If a VPN is essential for your trip, test it before arrival, prefer providers with obfuscated protocols, and accept that connection reliability will be lower than in countries without DPI. Social media restrictions: Instagram, WhatsApp, X, YouTube and TikTok have been blocked during political events in March 2025, September 2025 and during the implementation of the April 2026 Digital Platforms and Gaming Law. A password manager works without VPN. Keep secure offline copies of your passport, visa-free entry stamps, hotel bookings and return flight QR codes.
Mistakes to avoid in Turkey
Buying an eSIM after arriving in Turkey. Affected provider websites and apps are blocked from Turkish networks. Buy and activate at home before your flight.
Underestimating data needs. Top-ups are not available mid-trip. A 10 GB or 20 GB plan is a safer buffer than a 5 GB plan that might run out.
Relying on Unlimited plans for streaming. Airalo throttles approximately 3 GB/day at full speed; Saily allows 5 GB/day. A larger fixed plan (10–20 GB) is often more reliable for steady high-speed data.
Assuming a familiar VPN will work. Major commercial VPNs are blocked; DPI catches the rest. Test before you fly if a VPN is essential to your trip.

Why are eSIMs blocked in Turkey?
On 10 July 2025, Turkey's telecommunications authority (BTK) issued decision E-98966759-450.08-36681, blocking network-level access to eight international eSIM provider platforms. Verify which carrier your travel eSIM partners with in Turkey before purchasing — coverage varies by network and region.
Can I use an eSIM I bought before arriving in Turkey?
Generally yes, if the eSIM was purchased and installed on your phone before you crossed into Turkish airspace. Once installed and active outside Turkey, the eSIM continues to function via the international roaming agreement. New eSIM activations attempted from inside Turkey will fail under the BTK block. The safe approach: purchase, install and verify the eSIM works at least once before flying.
Should I get a local Turkish SIM as a backup?
Possibly. A local Turkish SIM from Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey or Türk Telekom is the only fully reliable connectivity in Turkey given the BTK block on most international eSIMs. Local SIMs require passport registration at airport kiosks or carrier stores. The 120-day IMEI rule applies if you stay longer. For short trips, a pre-installed travel eSIM may work, but carry a backup plan.
Do I need to register my phone with the BTK to use a Turkish SIM?
If you use a foreign-bought phone with a Turkish SIM for over 120 days, Turkish law requires IMEI registration with the BTK (via eGov portal) and payment of a registration fee. After 120 days unregistered, the phone is blocked on all Turkish networks regardless of which SIM is inside. Short-term tourists using international roaming or travel eSIMs are not affected by this requirement.
Is coverage good in Cappadocia and across rural Turkey?
In Cappadocia (Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos) and at the underground cities (Derinkuyu, Kaymakli), all three Turkish operators (Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey, Türk Telekom) provide 4G coverage in towns and at major balloon launch sites. Will I have signal at Ephesus, Pamukkale and other Turkish heritage sites?
At Ephesus, Pamukkale's travertines, Antalya old town (Kaleiçi) and Side, all three Turkish operators provide strong 4G coverage in tourist zones. Signal weakens on hillside hiking trails around the sites and in the more remote eastern Anatolia destinations (Mardin, Lake Van). Turkcell has the most consistent reach east of Ankara.
