Field tip — Jungle and caye coverage is limited
Belize City and the Cayo District (San Ignacio, Caracol) have reasonable 4G. The Belize Barrier Reef islands (Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker) have good resort-area coverage. Deep jungle lodges in the Mountain Pine Ridge, Cockscomb Basin and Tikal border area have limited or no signal. Download offline maps before any inland or jungle excursion.

Belize has two mobile operators: Digi and Smart. For Belize City, Belmopan, San Ignacio and coastal towns, both deliver 4G. Digi has the wider national footprint; Smart's coverage is patchier outside main population centres. There is no commercial 5G in Belize as of 2026; deployment is still at the planning and spectrum stage, so 4G/LTE is the network you will use throughout the country.
Among the providers on this page, only Airalo (its Cho! plan) discloses its carrier: it routes via Digi (BTL), the dominant network. The others do not publicly confirm theirs. What matters more for coverage: Digi (formerly DigiCell) has the widest national footprint, while Smart is patchier outside the main towns — so an eSIM on Digi will generally serve a multi-region itinerary better. For jungle lodges in the Mountain Pine Ridge and Cockscomb Basin and reef islands off the main cayes, see the field tip above for specific coverage gaps.
Roaming or eSIM — should you buy?
YOUR SITUATION → USE THIS
Your carrier includes Belize at a clear, affordable rate→Use roaming — no action needed
Coming from EU or UK→eSIM is the standard choice
Coming from US / Canada / Australia / NZ — carrier charges per-day→eSIM cheaper for stays over 2 days (T-Mobile US often includes Belize — verify first)
Coming from Asia — your carrier may have a regional deal→Check your carrier rates first
Coming from another region→Check your carrier rates first — eSIM is usually cheaper than per-MB roaming
Arrival protocol in Belize
Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing at Philip S.W. Goldson International (BZE).
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
If visiting jungle lodges or the Mountain Pine Ridge, download offline maps and accommodation contacts before leaving Belize City.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing at Philip Goldson
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds or manually select Digi or Smart.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
Local Digi or Smart prepaid SIMs require passport + biometric registration (mandatory since 2013); a travel eSIM avoids this.
VPN, passwords and documents
On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
Mistakes to avoid in Belize
Assuming your home SIM works at home rates here. Belize has no regional roaming agreement with any country — UK Commonwealth ties (Belize is the former British Honduras) don't change that, and Central American neighbours don't have a bilateral framework either. Some US and Canadian carriers include Belize in international plans; check yours before relying on it. For stays over 1–2 days, a travel eSIM is usually cheaper.
Expecting 5G. Commercial 5G is not live in Belize as of 2026 — both Digi and Smart run 4G/LTE only. Marketing claims of "5G-ready eSIMs" do not translate to 5G access here.
Trying to buy a local SIM without passport at hand. Belize has mandatory biometric SIM registration since 2013. Both Digi and Smart require passport + biometric capture at point of purchase. A travel eSIM avoids this entirely.
Counting on signal in deep jungle or on the reef. Mountain Pine Ridge, Cockscomb Basin, Tikal border area and the Belize Barrier Reef itself have limited or no coverage. Download offline maps before any inland or offshore excursion.
Belize has no regional roaming agreement with any country — UK Commonwealth ties don't change that, and there's no Central American bilateral framework either. Foreign SIMs are charged international roaming by default. A few US and Canadian carriers include Belize in international plans; check yours before buying. For everyone else, a travel eSIM is cheaper than carrier roaming beyond a 1–2 day stopover. Local Digi or Smart SIMs are sold in Belize City and at Philip Goldson Airport but require passport ID + biometric registration (mandatory since 2013); a travel eSIM activates on landing with no paperwork.
Is there 5G in Belize?
No — commercial 5G is not live in Belize as of 2026. Both Digi (Belize Telemedia / BTL, government-owned, rebranded from DigiCell August 2018) and Smart (Speednet) run 4G/LTE only. BTL launched the region's first commercial 4G LTE-Advanced network in December 2016 with Huawei but neither operator has announced 5G plans. Mobile rates in Belize are among the highest in Central America due to limited competition.
Does coverage reach Ambergris Caye and the cayes?
Yes — Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) and Caye Caulker have good 4G at the main resort and town areas. BTL completed a submarine cable to Ambergris Caye in 2017 enabling fibre-to-the-home and reliable 4G. Remote uninhabited cayes and offshore dive sites have limited or no signal. The Belize Barrier Reef itself has no coverage. Download offline navigation before any dive or snorkel excursion offshore.
