Best eSIM for Mexico

Two physical networks serve Mexico: Telcel (~65% market share, dominant on Yucatán routes, Pacific coast, Sierra Madre and Copper Canyon — the only reliable option for rural and archaeological sites) and AT&T Mexico (good in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and main resorts, drops outside urban areas). Movistar shut down its own radio network in 2020 and now runs on AT&T's, so Movistar coverage mirrors AT&T's. Archaeological sites — Chichén Itzá, Cobá, Palenque — have limited or no signal near the ruins. Download offline maps before visiting.

Since 9 January 2026, all Mexican-issued mobile lines (physical SIMs and eSIMs from Telcel, AT&T Mexico or Movistar) must be registered with valid government ID. Foreign-issued travel eSIMs are exempt — they roam onto Mexican networks via international agreements rather than being issued by a Mexican carrier, and require no registration. A local Mexican SIM is registered at the point of sale (passport for foreigners); lines issued before the law are being linked on a staggered schedule set by the regulator.
