Field tip — Check your EU/EEA fair-use policy
EU Roam Like At Home rules apply in Croatia, but most EU carriers cap roaming data well below your domestic allowance. A French subscriber with 100 GB/month at home may only roam 20–25 GB in Croatia before extra charges apply. Check your FUP limit before deciding whether to use your EU SIM or buy a travel eSIM. Critically: if your road trip from Dubrovnik to Split passes through Bosnia and Herzegovina (via the Neum corridor), turn off mobile data before crossing the Bosnian border. Bosnia is not in the EU — roaming charges resume immediately on any EU or non-EU SIM, and the Neum transit is only a few kilometres but enough to rack up charges.
Field tip — For Dalmatian island trips, network choice matters more than price
4G coverage is solid on the main Dalmatian islands in tourist areas — Hvar Town, Bol on Brač, Korčula Town, Vis Town. But the further you get from the main settlements, the more networks diverge. Hrvatski Telekom (HT) has the strongest island coverage, particularly on the outer ends of larger islands and on ferries. Telemach roams on HT in rural and outer island areas, which partially compensates, but HT native access is more reliable. If your trip is primarily island-focused — especially Vis, Lastovo or outer Hvar — Roamless is the only provider on this page with confirmed HT access. Download offline maps (Organic Maps works well for island trails) before boarding each ferry.
Coverage notes cross-referenced from multiple independent sources.
Prepaid tiers (1–30 GB, 30-day validity) and a day-by-day unlimited ladder (1–30 days). Entry price $2.40 for 1 GB/30 days — the lowest fixed data entry price on this page. Unlimited from $4.20/1 day. Carrier not disclosed.
Prepaid tiers (1–20 GB) and unlimited tiers. Routes via Telemach and A1 Croatia (Telemach roams on HT in rural areas and outer islands). Cheapest unlimited: $9.50/3 days.
Croatia has three mobile operators: Hrvatski Telekom (HT) — the largest with the widest overall footprint, including the strongest performance on the Dalmatian islands, national parks (Plitvice, Krka) and inland rural areas; A1 Croatia — strong urban coverage in Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka and Zadar; and Telemach — solid in cities and main coastal towns, roaming on HT in areas without its own coverage.
Among the five providers on this page: Roamless routes via all three operators (A1, Telemach and HT). Airalo (Cronet plan) routes via Telemach and A1 — no HT. aloSIM routes via Telemach and A1. Saily and Yesim do not disclose their Croatian carrier. For Dalmatian island itineraries where network choice matters, see the field tip above.
Roaming or eSIM — should you buy?
YOUR SITUATION → USE THIS
Your carrier includes Croatia at a clear, affordable rate→Use roaming — no action needed
EU SIM — Croatia is covered by RLAH→Check your fair-use cap, likely no eSIM needed
UK SIM — post-Brexit, some carriers charge for EU roaming in Croatia→Check your specific carrier's Croatia terms
Coming from US / Canada / Australia / NZ — carrier roaming runs $10–$20/day→eSIM is almost always the better option
Coming from Asia — carrier rates vary→Check your carrier rates first
Coming from another region→Check your carrier rates first — eSIM is usually cheaper than per-MB roaming
Arrival protocol in Croatia
Before departure from home
EU travellers: check your carrier's Croatia FUP limit before deciding whether to use EU roaming or buy a travel eSIM.
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM at home — Zagreb Airport has Wi-Fi but home activation is faster.
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps for island trails and national parks before each ferry leg.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Croatia
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
If using EU roaming, turn off data roaming on your travel eSIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
If driving via Neum, disable mobile data before the Bosnian border.
VPN, passwords and documents
Croatia has no internet restrictions — a VPN is not required for standard use. On hotel or marina Wi-Fi, a VPN is useful for banking or work. Croatia uses the Euro (since 2023) — cards are accepted virtually everywhere in tourist areas. Keep a secure backup of your passport, insurance and accommodation bookings — and an offline copy for ferry crossings where connectivity may be limited.
Mistakes to avoid in Croatia
Choosing Airalo for an island-hopping itinerary without knowing it routes via Telemach and A1 — not HT. On outer islands like Vis and Lastovo, HT native coverage outperforms Telemach. Roamless is the only provider on this page with confirmed HT access.
Not turning off mobile data on the Neum corridor. The Dubrovnik–Split road passes briefly through Bosnia, which is outside the EU. Any EU or international SIM card will start roaming in Bosnia at full carrier rates. Disable mobile data before the border and re-enable after re-entering Croatia.
Relying on EU roaming without checking your FUP cap. EU RLAH applies, but most carriers cap roaming data at a fraction of your domestic allowance. A 10-day Croatian summer trip with maps, social media and photo uploads can easily exceed 10 GB.
Assuming connectivity on remote outer islands and national park interiors. Velebit mountain and the interior of Plitvice and Paklenica national parks can have dead zones. Download offline maps before leaving Split or Zadar.
Yes. Croatia joined the EU in 2013, entered the Schengen Area on 1 January 2023 and adopted the Euro on the same date. EU Roam Like At Home applies for EU/EEA SIM cards across Croatia including the islands. Check your fair-use cap before extended stays. Non-EU visitors face expensive carrier roaming; a travel eSIM is generally cheaper.
Which network is best for the Dalmatian islands?
Croatia has three operators: Hrvatski Telekom/HT (widest national 4G/5G including coastal and island coverage), A1 Croatia (strong nationwide, competitive on islands) and Telemach (primarily urban). For Dalmatian islands — Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Vis, Lastovo — Hrvatski Telekom has the widest reach. Ferry coverage works near the coast but drops in open sea between distant islands.
