Field tip — Local SIMs at Sarajevo Airport require passport registration
BH Telecom, HT Eronet and m:tel all have counters at Sarajevo International Airport. A prepaid tourist SIM with 15–20 GB costs roughly 20 BAM (around $11–12) — competitive for longer stays — but all stores require passport registration and ID verification, which takes 15 to 30 minutes. Airport SIM counters are not always staffed during off-peak arrivals. In-city stores in Baščaršija and Ferhadija Street are typically more efficient. A travel eSIM activates on landing with no paperwork and no ID required.
Field tip — Download offline maps before rural Herzegovina and mountain routes
Coverage is reliable in Sarajevo, Mostar and Banja Luka, and along the main M17 corridor (the Neretva valley route). Off the main roads — wine country villages near Čitluk and Međugorje, the Trebišnjica river valley, Sutjeska National Park and the Dinaric Alps backcountry — signal becomes unreliable or absent. The Sarajevo–Mostar road via the Ivan Sedlo pass has consistent 4G; the alternative scenic route through Jablanica has gaps. Download offline maps before any road trip beyond the main corridors. Cash is widely used in smaller towns — map your ATM locations before leaving a city.

Network coverage in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina has three mobile operators: BH Telecom, HT Eronet and m:tel. For Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka and the main highway corridors, all three deliver solid 4G. BH Telecom has the widest national footprint across both entities. HT Eronet is stronger in Herzegovina — Mostar, Trebinje and the Neretva valley. m:tel has the stronger footprint in Republika Srpska including Banja Luka, Bijeljina and eastern Bosnia. Commercial 5G is not available in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Among the five providers on this page: Roamless routes via BH Telecom 4G. Airalo routes via HT Eronet. aloSIM, Saily and Yesim do not disclose their Bosnian carrier. For rural mountain areas, national parks and remote valley roads where coverage becomes patchy on any network, see the field tip above.
Roaming or eSIM — should you buy?
Your carrier includes Bosnia and Herzegovina at a clear, affordable rate→Use roaming — no action needed
Coming from EU or UK — no EU/UK roaming agreement covers BiH→eSIM is the standard choice
Coming from US / Canada / Australia / NZ — carrier charges per-day→eSIM cheaper for stays over 2 days
Coming from Asia — regional deals vary→Check your carrier rates first
Coming from another region→Check your carrier rates first — eSIM is usually cheaper than per-MB roaming
Arrival protocol in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Before departure from home
EU travellers: check your carrier's Bosnia and Herzegovina roaming rate — EU RLAH does NOT apply.
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation is automatic on landing.
Save QR code and setup instructions offline.
Download offline maps for rural Herzegovina routes and national park areas before departure.
Keep home SIM active for calls and SMS.
After landing in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Do not delete the eSIM if it does not connect immediately — check settings first.
VPN, passwords and documents
Bosnia and Herzegovina has no internet restrictions — a VPN is not required for standard use. On hotel or hostel Wi-Fi in Sarajevo's Baščaršija or Mostar's old city, a VPN is useful for banking or work accounts on shared networks. Cash is still widely used outside main tourist areas — plan your ATM stops before leaving a city. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and accommodation bookings is useful; keep an offline copy.
Mistakes to avoid in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Assuming your EU SIM is covered. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in the EU — Roam Like At Home does not apply. Check your carrier's specific rate before arrival.
Choosing Airalo for a Sarajevo-first itinerary without knowing it routes via HT Eronet. HT Eronet is the strongest in Herzegovina, but BH Telecom has the wider national footprint. For national travel including Sarajevo, Roamless (BH Telecom) is the more reliable choice.
Not downloading offline maps before rural Herzegovina and mountain routes. Signal in the Sutjeska wilderness, Dinaric backcountry and smaller valley roads is limited. Download in Sarajevo or Mostar before heading into remote areas.
Assuming the Western Balkans roaming zone applies to travel eSIMs. The Western Balkans roaming agreement (Albania, Kosovo, N.Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia) applies only to local carrier SIMs. International travel eSIMs are separate plans for each country.

Common questions about eSIM in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Do I need a travel eSIM for Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Bosnia and Herzegovina is not an EU or EEA member, and EU Roam Like At Home does not apply. EU/EEA SIM cards incur roaming charges here. A travel eSIM is the standard option for international visitors. Local SIMs (BH Telecom, HT Eronet, m:tel) are sold at Sarajevo International Airport and city-centre stores but require passport registration. A travel eSIM activates on landing without paperwork.
Does coverage reach rural Herzegovina and mountain areas?
Coverage is reliable in Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka and along main highways. In rural Herzegovina — Neretva valley wine country and smaller towns — signal is patchy off the main roads. Mountain passes, Sutjeska National Park and remote Dinaric Alps areas have limited coverage on all networks. BH Telecom has the widest national footprint; HT Eronet is stronger in Herzegovina.
Which Bosnian network should I choose for a travel eSIM?
Bosnia and Herzegovina has three mobile operators: BH Telecom (state-owned, widest national coverage including Sarajevo, central Bosnia and Republika Srpska), HT Eronet (Croatian-backed, strong in Herzegovina — Mostar, Trebinje, Neretva valley) and m:tel (Serbian-backed, dominant in Republika Srpska and eastern Bosnia including Banja Luka). Verify which carrier your travel eSIM partners with in Bosnia and Herzegovina before purchasing — coverage varies by network and region.
