How much will it cost for your trip?
Despite being French territory, French Polynesia is not an EU Outermost Region — it is a PTOM (pays et territoire d'outre-mer). EU Roam Like At Home rules do not apply. French SIM cards (Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free) incur international roaming charges in French Polynesia. Most French carriers offer specific French Polynesia roaming add-ons. A travel eSIM avoids this complexity and is almost always cheaper.
Papeete (Tahiti) has excellent 4G. Moorea has good coverage. Bora Bora — the main resort island — has 4G on Vini in the main villages (Vaitape). The over-water bungalows have signal from shore. The Tuamotu atolls (Rangiroa, Fakarava) have basic signal in the village atoll; open ocean dives are offline. The Marquesas Islands (Nuku Hiva, Hiva Oa) have very limited signal — download all route and accommodation data in Papeete.

Network coverage in French Polynesia
French Polynesia has two operators: Vini (market leader, covers 62 islands, 4G since 2015) and Vodafone Polynésie (competitive, 4G since 2017, cheaper prepaid options). For Tahiti (Papeete, Moorea ferry), Bora Bora, Rangiroa and Fakarava, both operators provide reliable 4G. Commercial 5G is live only around Papeete and Faa'a on Tahiti (via Vini); everywhere else, including Bora Bora and the outer atolls, is 4G.
On remote atolls in the Tuamotus or Marquesas, only Vini has coverage — Vodafone does not reach all 62 islands. Travel eSIM providers on this page route via Vini or Vodafone Polynésie — check the carrier listed on each provider card. For outer-island itineraries, a Vini-routed eSIM is the safer choice.
