Field tip — Remote beach fales have limited signal

Apia (Upolu) and main towns have good 4G on Digicel. Savai'i (the larger, quieter island) has coverage in Salelologa and along the coast road. Beach fale (traditional open-sided guesthouse) areas on both islands have basic signal. The interior rainforest and cross-island road have variable coverage. Download offline maps before any cross-island drive.

Apia has good 4G. The northern Upolu coast (Lalomanu beach, To Sua Ocean Trench) has decent signal along the coast road. Savai'i's Falealupo rainforest and lava fields have limited coverage. Download offline maps for both islands before departing Apia. Inter-island ferry crossing (1 hour) has no mobile signal.

Network coverage in Samoa

Samoa has two mobile operators: Vodafone Samoa (formerly Bluesky, incumbent, 98.5% population coverage) and Digicel Samoa (unit of Digicel Pacific, owned by Telstra since 2021). LTE launched in 2016 on Digicel and 2017 on Vodafone, both on 1800 MHz (Band 3). No 5G is available in Samoa and no government timeline exists for a licence auction. For a standard stay in Apia and the resorts on Upolu’s north coast, Vodafone delivers the more consistent 4G signal.

The choice changes for Savaiʻi: Vodafone’s coverage there drops significantly in coastal and rural areas, whereas Digicel holds stronger 4G along most of Savaiʻi’s coast (Cape Mulinuʻu, Alofaaga Blowholes). Travellers heading to Savaiʻi’s lava fields should favour a Digicel-routed plan. On this page, aloSIM and Saily do not disclose their Samoa carrier — so for an Upolu-only trip a local Vodafone SIM may outperform them, and for Savaiʻi confirm the plan uses Digicel before relying on it.

Arrival protocol in Samoa

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Samoa
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
