Kazakhstan is vast — the steppe between cities can stretch 500+ km with minimal coverage. Plan your data usage accordingly. Keep cash in Tenge for petrol stations, roadside cafés and remote guesthouses.
Almaty, Astana and major cities have good 4G. However, Kazakhstan is 2.7 million km² — driving between cities across the steppe means long stretches with no signal on any network. Charyn Canyon, the Altai mountains, the Caspian coast near Aktau and the Aral Sea region all have very limited coverage. Download offline maps and route data before leaving any city. A local SIM may give better steppe coverage than a travel eSIM in remote areas.

Three mobile operators serve Kazakhstan: Kcell (dominant), Beeline KZ and Tele2 KZ / Altel. For Almaty, Astana, Shymkent and main cities, all three provide solid 4G/5G. Coverage in the Kazakh steppe and remote regions follows road corridors and drops significantly between cities.
