Kazakhstan is not an EU member. EU RLAH does not apply. Most EU carriers charge daily roaming fees. A travel eSIM is almost always cheaper. Kazakhstan is vast — the steppe between cities can stretch 500+ km with minimal coverage. Plan your data usage accordingly. Keep cash in Tenge for petrol stations, roadside cafés and remote guesthouses.

Almaty, Astana and major cities have good 4G. However, Kazakhstan is 2.7 million km² — driving between cities across the steppe means long stretches with no signal on any network. Charyn Canyon, the Altai mountains, the Caspian coast near Aktau and the Aral Sea region all have very limited coverage. Download offline maps and route data before leaving any city. A local SIM may give better steppe coverage than a travel eSIM in remote areas.

Network coverage in Kazakhstan

Three mobile operators serve Kazakhstan: Kcell (dominant), Beeline KZ and Tele2 KZ / Altel. For Almaty, Astana, Shymkent and main cities, all three provide solid 4G/5G. Coverage in the Kazakh steppe and remote regions follows road corridors and drops significantly between cities.

Arrival protocol in Kazakhstan

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Kazakhstan
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa, insurance and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Kazakhstan
