How much will it cost for your trip?
Kigali has exceptional 4G/5G coverage. The Volcanoes National Park area (Musanze/Ruhengeri) has good signal in town — the bamboo forest trekking zones themselves have limited coverage but signal is available from the forest edge. Nyungwe Forest National Park (chimpanzees) has signal at the Kitabi Eco Centre. Lake Kivu shores have good coverage in Gisenyi and Kibuye.
Gorilla trekking starts from the park headquarters near Musanze. The bamboo forest where gorilla families range has no mobile coverage. Download offline maps and safari briefing information in Musanze the evening before. Photography apps and species identification guides are useful — download them before the trek.

Network coverage in Rwanda
Rwanda has two mobile operators: MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda. Both provide 4G across the country, with MTN holding the wider coverage footprint. For a typical itinerary — Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, Lake Kivu, Nyungwe Forest, Akagera National Park — both carriers perform reliably in towns and on main routes. MTN launched 5G in Kigali in mid-2025, currently concentrated in central districts; Airtel has not yet deployed 5G in Rwanda.
In national parks and forest reserves, signal is available at lodges and visitor centres but drops off during treks — there is no reliable coverage inside the gorilla trekking zones in Volcanoes NP. Download offline maps before entering. On this page, Airalo typically routes via MTN Rwanda (the wider-coverage network); Saily and Roamless do not disclose their Rwandan carrier, but MTN and Airtel provide comparable 4G outside the park interiors.

VPN, passwords and documents
On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
