Field tip — Bwindi and Kidepo have no mobile signal

Kampala and Entebbe have excellent 4G. Jinja (Nile source, white-water rafting) has good signal. Fort Portal (gateway to Kibale, Rwenzori) has decent coverage. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (gorilla trekking) has basic signal at Buhoma and Nkuringo ranger stations but no coverage in the forest itself. Kidepo Valley National Park (remote north) is largely offline.

Field tip — Download offline maps for Bwindi and Kibale forest before leaving Kampala

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi requires a permit (USD 700 per person, 2026). The bamboo and montane forest where gorilla families roam has no mobile coverage. Download offline maps and permit confirmation documents in Kampala before travel. Kibale Forest (chimpanzee tracking) has basic signal at Kanyanchu visitor centre but none on the forest trails.

Network coverage in Uganda

Uganda's mobile market is dominated by two operators: MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda. For a typical itinerary — Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls — both perform well in towns and main road corridors with 4G. MTN has launched 5G in Kampala; rural coverage is the main differentiator between the two operators.

Inside national parks, coverage drops noticeably away from lodge and gate areas. On this page, Airalo routes via Airtel — which travellers and local guides report as the more stable network in Bwindi and the gorilla-trekking areas — while Roamless and Saily do not disclose their Ugandan carrier. Arrival protocol in Uganda

Before departure from home
Check your phone supports eSIM — dial *#06#, look for an EID number.
Install the eSIM before your flight — activation may require connectivity that is no longer available abroad.
Save the QR code and setup instructions offline (screenshots or PDF).
Download offline maps for your destinations before you leave.
After landing in Uganda
Go to Settings → Mobile data → select the eSIM as your data line.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid background charges.
Test with a page load. If nothing loads, toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds and try again before deleting the profile.

VPN, passwords and documents

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Uganda has two operators: MTN Uganda (dominant, widest 4G coverage including Fort Portal, the Bwindi gateway towns of Buhoma/Nkuringo and Queen Elizabeth NP) and Airtel Uganda (strong in Kampala and main towns). For Bwindi, Kibale and remote western Uganda, MTN has the most extensive coverage.
