eSIM for Niue
Travel eSIMs do not work in Niue. The sole operator has no international roaming agreements — no provider's eSIM will connect on arrival. The only option is a local SIM card purchased at the airport kiosk on arrival or at the operator office in Alofi.

Alofi and the main ring road have reasonable 4G on Telecom Niue. The Togo Chasm, Matapa Chasm and Limu Pools (natural sea pools carved into coral limestone) have variable coverage. Wahoo dive sites and whale swimming areas are offshore — completely offline. Download offline maps and whale operator contact details before any ocean excursion.
Niue has some extraordinary geological features — the Togo Chasm involves a descent through a crack in limestone to reach a palm-lined hidden basin. The Avaiki Cave and Vaikona Chasm require scrambling along cliff tracks with no signal. Download offline maps and self-guided chasm/cave notes before departure from Alofi. Niue has no traffic lights, no shopping centres and no fast food — one of the Pacific's most authentic destinations.

eSIM — Niue
Network coverage in Niue
Telecom Niue is the sole operator — a government-owned monopoly. 4G/LTE launched in 2019 on 700 MHz Band 28 (the same band used in Australia and New Zealand). No 5G. Coverage is good along the coastal roads around the island; inland areas drop to 2G or have no signal. Phones must support Band 28 to access 4G; Apple devices with VoLTE and most modern Android handsets are compatible. Devices without Band 28 support will fall back to 2G only.
Telecom Niue has no international roaming agreements with any foreign operator — not even New Zealand carriers. Visitors cannot use their home SIM's roaming plan. Because of this, travel eSIMs will most likely show no signal on arrival; some global plans may provide limited data only, never calls or SMS, so do not rely on one. The reliable option is a Telecom Niue SIM card purchased at the airport kiosk (on plane arrival days) or at the Telecom Niue office in Alofi Commercial Centre. Visitors whose phones lack Band 28 can rent a MiFi device from Telecom Niue.

Arrival protocol in Niue
VPN, passwords and documents
On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road. A secure cloud backup of your passport, visa and accommodation details can also be useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
