How much will it cost for your trip?
Nuku'alofa (Tongatapu) and Neiafu (Vava'u) have reasonable 4G on Digicel. Vava'u is the hub for humpback whale swimming — coverage is good in Neiafu. On whale-watching boat trips, coverage is absent at sea. Ha'apai islands (remote, beautiful) have very limited signal. The Niua group (far north) has almost no coverage.
Neiafu (Vava'u) has the best connectivity for the whale swimming season. Download offline marine charts and snorkel site maps before any boat excursion — operators often go 1–2 hours offshore where no signal exists. Ha'apai is very remote — plan to be offline for the duration of any Ha'apai stay.

Network coverage in Tonga
Tonga has two mobile operators: Digicel Tonga and the state-owned incumbent Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC), which sells mobile services under the U Call brand. Both operators launched commercial 5G in late 2024 — Digicel on November 29, TCC in early December — using 2500 MHz and 3500 MHz spectrum. As of mid-2025, 5G coverage is limited to Nukuʻalofa (Tongatapu), where Digicel’s Phase 1 covers approximately 30% of the capital’s population across 15 upgraded sites. 4G/LTE is available across most of Tongatapu; outer island groups (Vavaʻu, Haʻapai, ʻEua) have 4G in main settlements with 3G or no coverage in remote areas.
Most international roaming plans connect visitors via TCC/U Call, which delivers slower data speeds than Digicel — a local SIM or a travel eSIM routing via Digicel is the stronger option. On this page, Airalo (a dedicated Tonga eSIM, also in its Oceanlink regional plan) routes via Digicel; Saily, Roamless, aloSIM and Yesim do not name their carrier, though Digicel is the dominant network here.

On hotel or café Wi-Fi, a VPN can be useful to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager is also worth having for managing account access on the road.
