How much will it cost for your trip?
North Macedonia is an EU candidate but not an EU member. EU Roam Like At Home rules do not apply. Most EU carriers charge daily fees for North Macedonia. The country uses Macedonian Denar (MKD) — not the Euro. Cash in MKD is commonly needed outside Skopje, especially in rural restaurants, markets and monastery entry fees. Cards are accepted in Skopje hotels and larger restaurants.
Coverage is good in Skopje, Ohrid town, Bitola and along main roads. Lake Ohrid shoreline has reliable signal. Mountain areas — Mavrovo, Pelister, Galičica national parks — have variable coverage with signal drops on higher trails and remote roads. Download offline maps before any mountain itinerary.
Prices sourced from provider websites. Network and status information sourced from provider documentation and official sources (2026).

Network coverage in North Macedonia
North Macedonia has two main mobile networks: A1 Macedonia (market leader as of 2025, 99.8% 4G population coverage, 5G in major cities) and Makedonski Telekom (T-Mobile brand, 5G across 26 cities and the more consistent rural coverage around Ohrid, Struga and the western mountains). For the main tourist circuit — Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola, Mavrovo — both deliver solid 4G and 5G. MTEL (Telekom Srbija-owned) is a smaller third operator with limited share — not a primary choice for visitors.
North Macedonia is an EU candidate but not yet a member — Roam Like Home rules do not automatically apply; check your European carrier's policy. On this page, Airalo routes via A1 or Makedonski Telekom (sources differ); Roamless and Saily do not disclose their carrier. For the western mountains and around Ohrid, a Makedonski Telekom-routed plan has the rural edge.

VPN, passwords and documents
North Macedonia has no significant internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.
