Serbia is not an EU member state and is not in the European Economic Area. EU Roam Like At Home rules do not apply in Serbia. Most EU carriers charge a daily fee (typically €1.99–€5.99/day) for data roaming in Serbia, or charge per MB at expensive rates. Some EU carriers voluntarily extend roaming coverage to Balkans countries — check your specific carrier's Serbia roaming terms. For most visitors, a travel eSIM is significantly cheaper than EU or international carrier roaming in Serbia.

Field tip — Withdraw Serbian Dinars before heading to mountains or rural areas; cash is commonly needed

Cards are accepted in Belgrade restaurants, hotels and larger shops, and increasingly in Novi Sad and tourist areas. However, cash in Serbian Dinars (RSD) is commonly needed in smaller towns, local markets, rural restaurants, national park entry points and mountain huts (on Zlatibor, Tara, Kopaonik and Fruska Gora). ATMs (bankomat) are widely available in Belgrade, Novi Sad and major towns. Exchange cash at banks or official exchange offices for the best rates — airport exchange desks offer poor rates. Draw cash in Belgrade before heading to any national park or mountain resort.

Network coverage in Serbia

Serbia has three mobile operators: Telekom Srbija/MTS (largest, widest 4G coverage including rural Serbia, national parks and mountain regions), Yettel (formerly Telenor Serbia — strong across cities and main routes), and A1 Serbia (competitive urban coverage). For a typical itinerary — Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš — all three perform well with 4G. All three operators launched commercial 5G in December 2025, initially in major cities with nationwide rollout planned through 2026.

For Zlatibor, Tara National Park, Kopaonik and rural Serbia, Telekom Srbija/MTS has the most reliable footprint — but none of the eSIMs here use it. On this page, Airalo routes via A1 Serbia (urban-focused), aloSIM via Yettel and A1, and Yesim does not confirm its carrier. For deep rural travel, aloSIM's Yettel access is the better bet of the three; a local Telekom/MTS SIM remains the most reliable option.

Arrival protocol in Serbia

VPN, passwords and documents

Serbia has no significant internet restrictions. A VPN can be useful on public Wi-Fi (cafés, hotels, airports) to keep your browsing private from the network operator. A password manager can also be useful. A secure cloud backup of your passport, insurance certificate and hotel bookings is also useful — keep an offline copy too. None of these are mandatory.

Mistakes to avoid in Serbia

Assuming your home plan covers Serbia at domestic rates. Serbia sits outside the EU roaming zone and most carriers charge daily roaming fees here — check your carrier's rate before departure.
Deleting the eSIM if it does not connect immediately on landing. Activation can take a few minutes — confirm the eSIM is the active data line and toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds before deleting anything.
Choosing an eSIM for mountain and rural trips without checking its network. A1 Serbia is primarily urban while Telekom Srbija/MTS has the widest rural coverage — for Zlatibor, Tara and Kopaonik, see the network coverage block.
Expecting 5G outside Belgrade. 5G is live in Belgrade and expanding to Novi Sad and Niš, but most of Serbia still runs on 4G/LTE — download offline maps before rural or mountain trips.

Common questions about eSIM in Serbia

Is SIM card registration required in Serbia?
Yes, for prepaid SIM cards issued by Serbian operators. Under the Law on Electronic Communications, operators must register each end-user with a first and last name plus one identifier, such as a passport or identity card number. Prepaid numbers left unregistered are eventually deactivated, so an identity document is needed to keep a local prepaid SIM working.
