Field tip — Rural areas outside resorts have limited coverage

Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and all main resort areas have strong 4G. The Samaná Peninsula, Las Terrenas and Las Galeras have decent coverage in town. The interior — Cordillera Central, Jarabacoa mountains, Constanza — has variable signal with some rural gaps. Download offline maps before mountain biking or hiking inland.

Network coverage in Dominican Republic

Three mobile operators serve the Dominican Republic: Claro Dominicana (market leader, widest coverage including rural areas, resorts and road corridors, 5G since December 2021), Altice Dominicana (urban and tourist-hub coverage, 5G in cities) and Viva Dominicana (4G in major cities only, no 5G — not recommended for road trips or resort areas outside Santo Domingo). For Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Las Terrenas and Samaná, Claro and Altice both perform well.

Claro is the stronger choice for itineraries that include the Cibao Valley, the southwest (Barahona, Pedernales) or areas near the Haitian border. Travel eSIM providers on this page route via Claro or Altice — check the carrier listed on each provider card.
